Incident 041/2026

This year, whilst covering the annual 3 Peaks Cyclo Cross event on Sunday 27th September, one of the race marshals, the sweep rider presented himself to our Team on the Whernside checkpoint felling very unwell, feverish, shivering, vomiting and having a headache.

Our initial assessment couldn’t gauge a breathing rate but with his medical conditional deteriorating we called for helicopter support. Unfortunately, due to the wind speed in excess of 50knots, air support was unable to land, we therefore resulted to basic mountain rescue techniques and stretchered the male off the fell over 1km across rough ground to an awaiting ambulance, where he was then transferred.

A difficult situation that used all of our skill and knowledge, both medically and extrication, over 20 volunteers of Bowland Pennine Mountain Rescue were involved in this incident.

We wish the young male a swift and speedy recovery.
